Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez's friendship has had its share of public twists over more than two decades, but the two are in a noticeably good place again, something Lovato addressed directly in a new interview with ELLE.
A collaboration built on nostalgia
The pair teamed up on a campaign for Gomez's beauty brand, Rare Beauty, reviving their characters from the 2009 Disney Channel movie Princess Protection Program. Lovato traced the friendship back to its real starting point, well before either of them was famous. 'We've been friends since we were 7 years old when we met on Barney,' she said. 'There have been different chapters throughout our lives, and naturally, friends are in each other's lives heavily at times, and then sometimes you're not in constant communication. But Selena is someone that I've always loved and adored. It's really great to be in a place today where we can collaborate on things, but also just hang out and spend time together.'
The campaign also revisited another piece of their shared history: the YouTube vlogs the two filmed together as teenagers in 2008. Lovato said rewatching them recently was a mix of nostalgic and cringeworthy. 'I went on YouTube recently and looked at our vlogs together,' she said. 'I think that was something that really captured our innocence at the time and our drive to have a presence in front of people while still staying true to ourselves.' She admitted she could not get through a full video with her husband without feeling embarrassed, but still called the clips iconic.
