Taylor Swift gave fans two distinct looks at the Academy Museum Gala on Saturday, and one of the smaller details ended up being just as talked about as the outfit changes: a new way of wearing her wedding rings.
Splitting up the stack
Swift arrived on the red carpet in a custom blue Dior gown before changing into a navy Ralph Lauren dress to perform. At some point during the night, she also switched up her jewelry, wearing her contoured wedding band alone on her left hand and moving her old mine cushion-cut engagement ring to her right, the first time she has shown the band off on its own at a public event. One practical theory: since she played guitar during her set, keeping the band on her fretting hand and the larger stone on the other may have simply made it easier to move across the strings without catching on anything.
What jewelers noticed in the new photos
The gala's close-up shots gave jewelry experts their best look yet at the design. Angie Kennedy, senior vice president of merchandising at Zales, called it a thoughtfully styled bridal stack where the band adds sparkle without competing with the engagement ring's center stone. She described the band's diamonds as round brilliant or old European cut stones set in a thin, delicate yellow gold bezel, blending classic and contemporary details into a clean, low-profile design.
Ali Galgano, founder of Serpentine Jewels, pointed to proportion as the band's strongest feature, noting the round stones are sized to accent the elongated cushion-cut engagement ring rather than overpower it. She also highlighted the practical logic of bezel settings paired with a prong-set engagement ring: the gold border helps keep the diamonds from scratching each other when the rings are worn together daily.
A design built to work both ways
Galgano noted the band appears shaped to contour around the engagement ring when worn together, while still holding its own as a standalone piece, something she considers a mark of a well-designed wedding band. Swift first debuted the full stack on a red carpet at the MTV VMAs on September 27. She and Travis Kelce married on July 3 and have not released official wedding photos.
