HBO's Harry Potter series is not even out yet, and it already has a second season locked in. The network confirmed the renewal on May 7, with the show heading back to Hogwarts for a new adventure following Harry, Ron and Hermione. Season one is still set to premiere on Christmas Day.
A new co-showrunner joins
Co-showrunner Francesca Gardiner announced that writer Jon Brown, her former collaborator on Succession, has been promoted to co-showrunner alongside her, a move she said was necessary to keep up with the overlapping production schedules of finishing season one and returning to shoot season two this autumn. Brown said he was thrilled to keep building the world after writing on Philosopher's Stone, joking that apparently no one is ever too old for an invitation to Hogwarts.
When filming starts and what to expect
Production on season two has not begun yet but is expected to start this fall, well ahead of season one's release. HBO chief executive Casey Bloys said in a March 2026 interview that the season is currently being written, and that the goal is to avoid long gaps between seasons given how quickly the young cast is growing, even though the show's scale rules out a strict annual schedule. The season is expected to adapt Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, which follows Harry's second year at Hogwarts as new characters, including the boastful professor Gilderoy Lockhart and the ghost Moaning Myrtle, arrive alongside a mystery involving students being turned to stone.
