The Odyssey is a story about a man who cannot get home, so it is fitting that making it involved going almost everywhere. Christopher Nolan shot on location across five countries, and the film's landscapes are, with very few exceptions, real places you can visit.
Greece
Much of the film was shot where the poem is set. The cyclops sequence was filmed in a cave in Messenia, and Nolan told Empire that the whole approach to the scene was to imagine what it would actually be like rather than treat it as a storybook. In his description it is a horrifying situation, and he wanted the audience inside it with the crew.
The Hellenic Film Commission lists further work at Voidokilia Beach, Almyrolaka Beach, the medieval Methoni Castle, and Acrocorinth.
Italy
Damon, Tom Holland, and Zendaya were photographed in Favignana in March 2025 alongside Ryan Hurst, who plays Mentor. The Times reported the production also worked across the Aeolian Islands, including Basiluzzo, Lipari, and Vulcano.
Scotland
Damon was seen in Scotland in July 2025 with Holland and Zendaya, wearing a long cape over leather armour on a local dock. Findlater Castle confirmed it had served as a location in the area.
Iceland
Stuck in Iceland reported that Nolan built a large ship set in the coastal harbour of Landeyjahofn, in the glacier region, which is about as unforgiving a place to construct a boat as the film could have found.
Morocco
Morocco supplied the desert. The BBC's Countryfile places the production in Marrakech and Essaouira, as well as Tahnaout and El Haouz. Ait Benhaddou, the UNESCO World Heritage site, stood in for the ancient city of Troy.
Taken together it is an itinerary as much as a shooting schedule, and a reminder that Nolan's resistance to building worlds in a computer has a very literal cost in air miles.
