Taylor Swift changed the background colours behind three of her songs on Spotify this week and said nothing about it, which by her standards counts as a press release.
The changes are small and specific. I Knew It, I Knew You now sits on solid green. Its piano version sits on purple. The original Blank Space has turned red.
Why anyone noticed
Because they were already looking. Fans have spent the summer cataloguing what they believe are hints at a thirteenth album, from repeated motifs in her clothing to a photographed trip to Electric Lady Studios in June that made the recording fairly hard to deny.
Against that background a colour change is not a colour change. It is data.
The leading theory
The most popular reading connects green to her self titled debut and therefore to a re recorded version of it. From there the theory expands: green for a country edition, red for a pop edition, purple for a piano and acoustic edition, with fans pointing to Shania Twain as the precedent for releasing one record in several genre versions.
It is elaborate, it is unverified, and it is entirely in keeping with how this artist has trained her audience to read her.
Where she actually is
Quiet. Swift has kept a very low profile since releasing I Knew It, I Knew You in June, married in July, and has not been seen publicly since. Her last album, The Life of a Showgirl, arrived in October 2025 after being announced on Travis Kelce's podcast New Heights.
Which leaves the colours doing all the talking, which is presumably the point.
