The Duchess of Sussex has posted a set of photographs from the family's European holiday, and the striking thing about them is how little they give away. There are beaches, swimming pools, a visit to a cockpit, a restaurant menu. There are no place names.
People reported in late June that Meghan and Prince Harry were travelling in Europe with Archie and Lilibet, and that the trip ran to more than a week. The Instagram post is the first look at any of it.
One location gave itself away
Among the images is a stop at Althorp, the Northamptonshire estate where Princess Diana grew up. People reported the family stayed there as guests of Harry's uncle, Charles Spencer. Meghan did not caption it, but Althorp is recognisable to anyone who has ever looked at it.
The other identification came from Town and Country, which matched the posted menu to O Melidense, a restaurant in Melides on the Portuguese coast. No photographs from the children's visit with their grandfather, King Charles, were included.
The first big trip since 2022
For Archie and Lilibet this is the first significant European journey since the Platinum Jubilee, and the first time in a while that either has appeared in a series of images rather than a single controlled portrait.
Meghan posts pictures of the children from California occasionally and takes many more that never surface. She explained the system on The Jamie Kern Lima Show last year: she set up email addresses for both children and sends photographs and notes to them most nights, to be handed over when they are older.
She described it as a time capsule for a generation that will not have scrapbooks. The messages are the small things, she said, the report from a given day, the funny remark at breakfast, the picture nobody would frame.
