Justin Bieber played the World Cup final halftime show at MetLife Stadium on Sunday and did almost nothing that a halftime show is supposed to do. There was no costume change, no dance corps, no pyrotechnics. There was a guitar and a song.
He performed Everything Hallelujah, in an oversized green polo shirt and Logan Hollowell earrings, and left.
He was not alone on the bill
The wider programme was the opposite of restrained, with performances from Madonna, Shakira, BTS, Burna Boy, and Gustavo Dudamel, plus the PS22 Chorus with Coldplay and, at one point, several Sesame Street cast members and Muppets.
Bieber announced his slot a few weeks ago on Instagram. The show was staged in support of the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, which works to widen access to education and to football for children.
A year back on stage
This is the latest in a run of high profile returns after a long absence. He sang Yukon from his 2025 album Swag at this year's Grammy Awards, in a performance that was literally stripped down, and headlined both weekends of Coachella with a set drawn largely from Swag and Swag II.
A source told People last September that both Justin and Hailey Bieber were thriving, with an anniversary just celebrated, his records selling, and her beauty business setting records of its own.
The simplicity of Sunday's set reads like a deliberate answer to all of that. When the room is that big, the smallest possible gesture is the one people remember.
