Jennifer Lopez marked her 57th birthday on July 24 the way she marks most things, which is to say publicly and with a very good outfit. The post that landed that day showed her in the back of a car in a white sundress with a ruched bodice and shoelace straps, hair loose and moving in the wind, makeup lit to within an inch of its life.
The caption was short. When you keep going, she wrote, it just keeps getting better.
A year of being on her own
The birthday arrives roughly a year after her divorce from Ben Affleck was finalised, and the read from people around her is that the year has been kinder than expected. A source who spoke to Entertainment Tonight described her as happier than she has been in a long time, and said she planned to keep the celebrations running past the day itself.
On the question everyone asks, the same source was direct without being dramatic. Lopez is open to finding love and would still like to meet the right person. She and Affleck, the source added, remain close, though the friendship is exactly that.
Paris first, then the party
Before the birthday she took a trip to Paris with her sister, whose own birthday falls a month earlier. Lopez posted about it afterwards in the register she saves for family rather than for cameras, thanking her sister for being at her side and calling the trip a long held wish finally granted.
It is a small thing, but it fits a pattern that has held all year. The public appearances have been fewer and the private ones better documented, which is usually what it looks like when someone has stopped performing contentment and started having it.
A very big month
The birthday capped a stretch that also included Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's wedding at Madison Square Garden on July 3. Lopez went, and posted the outfit afterwards: Bach Mai, scoop necked, velvet through the bodice and vinyl from the waist down, with silver flower settings picked to match her earrings.
Read together, the summer reads like a woman enjoying her own company and turning up for other people's big days without needing one of her own. At 57 that is arguably the more difficult trick.
