Jason and Kylie Kelce on What Changed When Taylor Swift Joined the Family

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have said nothing publicly since their wedding. His brother and sister in law have said quite a lot, and between them they have produced the clearest account yet of what happens to an ordinary famous family when a genuinely enormous star marries into it.

Jason: gradual, then all at once

Speaking on the Ross Tucker Football Podcast on July 21, Jason Kelce described a fame that built slowly and then changed character overnight. He had a strong following in Philadelphia, he said, and the Super Bowl run and his 2018 parade speech widened it. Then Swift and his brother started dating and the audience stopped being a football audience.

In his telling that was the flip. Music fans arrived with an interest not just in him but in the whole family, and the last few years have been, in his word, intense.

He also explained why there is now a bodyguard, and the reasoning is not what you would guess. The point, he said, is less about being protected than about being prevented from doing something stupid. Having someone large and calm nearby tends to defuse a situation before it becomes one, and so far nothing serious has happened. Most people, he added, are decent.

Kylie: congratulations, and that is all you are getting

Kylie Kelce addressed the wedding on her own show, Not Gonna Lie, and kept it to about twenty seconds. She congratulated the couple, called the day magical, and made the point that the marriage only formalised something already true, since Swift has been part of the family for a while.

Then she closed the door politely. Anything further, she said, was for Taylor and Travis to share if they wanted to. What she would say was that it was intimate, full of love, and not hers to describe.

The part that is not funny

On an earlier episode she was less breezy, talking about how the attention lands on her daughters. The girls find it funny, she said, to the point of playing a game among themselves where they pretend to be fans asking their own father for a photograph.

She does not find it funny. She said plainly that it makes her sad they have absorbed the mechanics of celebrity so young, and that she and Jason work to keep some separation between the family and the noise. Her eldest, who is six, has started giving hard looks to strangers who stare too long.

It is the least glamorous quote either of them gave, and probably the truest.
