Episode five opens on the Riverlands after dark, with the camera moving low over scrub toward a burned crossing and a camp held together by campfires. Another bridge is gone. The queen's river lords are running out of ways north.
Then the episode does the thing this season keeps doing, which is to make the violence quiet. Lord Petyr Piper stumbles on a pair of bodies, and never manages the shout that would wake the camp, because Criston Cole opens his throat from behind first. The tents go up. The Greens are already inside.
Harrenhal, and a nightmare
At Harrenhal, soldiers arrive hunting Aemond Targaryen, drawn by the bounty Rhaenyra has put on his head, and find Alys Rivers instead. She sends them off with the weary air of someone who has done this several times this month.
Their quarry is upstairs, thrashing in a dream. Aemond wakes with a blade half raised before he recognises her, and describes seeing his brother with his face on fire, clutching at him, pulling him down into the dark. Helaena's prophecy is doing its work.
A bottle in King's Landing
Grand Maester Orwyle talks his way past Alicent Hightower's guard, hands over a bottle, and quietly withdraws his support. There is a new queen now, and he has noticed the way people are looking at him.
The bottle is for Helaena, and it would end the pregnancy Alicent discovered last week. The politics are brutal in their simplicity. A boy would be Aegon's heir and therefore a rival, and Rhaenyra would have to either kill the child or claim him. Helaena resists. Alicent reframes.
One castle, several promises
Rhaenyra spends the episode learning that Harrenhal has been pledged to more people than can possibly hold it. Lady Sabitha Frey pursues her down a corridor to point out that the castle was promised to House Frey by Jacaerys Velaryon himself, in exchange for the Winter Wolves crossing the Twins.
The rest of the news arrives in a batch. Vhagar has burned farms outside Wendish Town and the trail is two days cold. Gold Cloaks are turning up dead in Flea Bottom with their throats cut.
The argument that keeps repeating
Daemon tells his wife that Aemond is a fox gone to ground and no danger to anyone. Rhaenyra does not believe it, and says there is treachery somewhere that she means to find. Daemon answers that what she is looking for is revenge, and that revenge can wait.
When she raises the Queen of Bastards graffiti spreading across the city, he reminds her she is the Queen of Dragons and that her strength is her legitimacy. It is the same advice he has given all season, and it keeps missing the same point. This is a threat she cannot burn.
