# The Tiredness That Sleep Does Not Fix

> Prolonged fatigue is not burnout and it does not respond to a good night's rest. Doctors report a sharp rise among young women who appear, from the outside, to be fine.

Everybody is tired sometimes. A deadline, a bad week of sleep, a stretch of burning the candle at both ends, and a few early nights usually put it right. What doctors are describing now is something else: a low grade exhaustion that does not lift with rest and is not clearly tied to how much work anybody is doing.

## Not burnout

The distinction matters. Burnout has dominated the conversation about exhaustion among women for a decade, and it has a shape: it comes from overload and it responds, eventually, to removing the overload. Prolonged fatigue does not behave that way.

Tony Banerjee, global chief medical officer at NADclinic, told ELLE there has been a significant increase in young women presenting with persistent fatigue, and that what stands out is the profile. Many are high functioning and career driven, appear entirely well from the outside, and are running on very little.

## What it actually feels like

Ahmed El Muntasar, who reports seeing the same rise, defines it as a persistent reduction in physical, mental, or emotional energy that is out of proportion to activity and not fully relieved by rest.

It shows up cognitively as brain fog and poor concentration, physically as low stamina or a sense of heaviness, and emotionally as flattened motivation. It interferes with ordinary functioning and can run for weeks or months, often with no identifiable trigger and no obvious clinical cause.

## The rubber band

The psychotherapist Nino Sopromadze offers the analogy that makes it click. The body is remarkably adaptive, she says, but adaptation has limits. Think of a rubber band, which can stretch impressively far without breaking. The danger is not the stretch. It is how long the tension is held. Held long enough, the elasticity itself weakens.

Experts put the failure of recovery at the centre of the problem. Fatigue, in this reading, signals dysregulation somewhere in the nervous system, metabolism, hormones, or inflammatory pathways rather than simple overwork.

## The numbers

A burnout report from Mental Health UK found that 50 percent of women aged 18 to 24, and 47 percent of those aged 25 to 34, said they always or often experience extreme or high levels of pressure and stress.

Deidre Bowen, director of UK programmes at the charity, points to a finding that cuts against the usual picture of the early twenties as a sociable decade. Six in ten of the younger women surveyed said isolation was driving their stress, and half pointed to working overtime or taking on more than they could carry.
