Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has already had the kind of opening that rewrites a director's own record. The film took an estimated 261 million dollars worldwide in its first weekend, past The Dark Knight Rises and the biggest debut of Nolan's career.

With that many people picking the film apart, the behind the scenes details have started to surface. The best of them came from Matt Damon, who plays Odysseus, on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

## The reveal

Damon said his double for one of the film's most demanding sequences was a woman, and that she had the greatest arms he had ever seen. He was joking about his own physique when he said it, but the underlying fact is straightforward: the performer in those shots is Canadian stunt performer, actor, and motion capture artist Devyn Dalton.

## Why the double was needed

Dalton stood in for Damon through the Laestrygonian passage, in which Odysseus and his crew meet a race of enormous cannibalistic giants. Nolan built the difference in scale the analogue way, using forced perspective and performers of very different heights rather than adding the giants later.

That approach only works if the smaller performer can hold the frame physically, which is where Dalton comes in. She is reported to stand around four feet six, and she has trained in boxing, Muay Thai, fencing, sword fighting, and several forms of dance.

## Where you have seen her without knowing it

Dalton was born in Vancouver and has spent her career in the disciplines that rarely carry a name above the title. Her credits include two apes, Cornelia and Cornelius, across the Planet of the Apes series, plus the physical performance behind Cosmo in The Electric State.

It is a specialism that only becomes visible when a lead actor decides to name it out loud, which is precisely what happened here.
