Nintendo's catalogue keeps turning up in cinemas, and The Legend of Zelda is next in the queue. The game sends Link through a run of trials to rescue Princess Zelda and deal with Ganon, and the live action version reaches audiences in 2027.
The date
April 30, 2027, worldwide. Shigeru Miyamoto announced in May that it had been pulled forward by a week from May 7, saying the team was working to get the film out as early as it could manage.
Who is playing whom
Miyamoto confirmed the two leads back in July 2025: Bo Bragason as Zelda, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link.
Deadline reported on August 6 that Uli Latukefu takes Ganondorf, a warlock king intent on taking Hyrule off the pair of them. Dichen Lachman, of Severance, and Yvonne Strahovski, of The Handmaid's Tale, both appear. So does Sam Neill, who shot his part before his death on July 13. Lydia Peckham was added on August 7, with her role still unannounced.
Ainsworth on playing two men in green tunics
Ainsworth is also Daeron Targaryen in House of the Dragon, and he told Decider in July that the odds of landing two fantasy roles that both involve a green tunic and a sword struck him as funny.
He found real similarities past the costume: enormous scale on both, an extraordinary level of detail inside that scale, and sets he describes as welcoming to walk onto. Both characters arrive carrying reputations, which he says would have been considerably more frightening without that atmosphere around him. He has been taken in by both fanbases and went out of his way to thank them.
Bragason on the jump
Speaking to Teen Vogue this month, Bragason described Zelda as a new world and said she likes stepping into something without knowing what is going to happen in it.
She also set the part against Oona, her character in Sterling Point, calling the two opposites in every respect while pointing out that a piece of her ends up inside each one.
Where the production stands
Finished. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that shooting wrapped in April 2026. The first look images landed in November 2025, with the two leads in costume walking through Hyrule together.
