Dakota Johnson hosted Saturday Night Live for the third time on October 3 to promote her new film Verity, opening with a monologue that poked fun at her own recent dating history. She joked about going through two very public, very lame breakups with two very awesome musicians, a likely reference to her 2025 split from Chris Martin and a reported breakup with Role Model earlier this year.
Turning the joke on herself
Rather than dwell on it, Johnson leaned into the bit, joking that she considers herself to be doing a public service by dating musicians, since it saves other women money on therapy across America, England, parts of Ireland and, allegedly, Cleveland, a line that drew a cheer referencing Taylor Swift's own song of the same name. She added that some of the men she has dated do not wear shoes and are not great in bed, but all of them end up in her DMs, joking that some people leave concerts with merch while she leaves with a two and a half year relationship.
Enter her literal therapist
Johnson then introduced a surprise guest, Taylor Swift, who appeared in her Patient Zero video alongside Johnson and Colin Farrell and is also one of the friends who actually hears about all of this in real life. Swift quickly pushed back on the therapist title, joking that she is not technically Johnson's therapist, just someone who shows up once a week with an empty wine bottle asking if she wants a refill. The two traded a playful back and forth about Johnson flopping on Swift's couch to overshare, Swift occasionally offering a sympathetic damn, that's crazy, and the routine ending with a sleepover, a Pedialyte and a ride home courtesy of Swift's security, a bit that captured, underneath the joke, exactly what a good friend's listening ear actually looks like.
