Sterling Point has been available for a week and is already being mentioned in the same breath as The Summer I Turned Pretty and Off-Campus, which for an Amazon show this early is a fairly reliable signal about where it is heading.
What the show is
Annie Jacobson finishes school and inherits an island in Canada from a grandfather she was never allowed to meet. She is not the only heir. Her twin brother Connor and Ramona, a biological sister whose existence was kept from her, each inherit a share of it, and the three of them set about becoming siblings while turning over the family history and starting relationships at the same time.
The first season logline puts her at 17, deciding to look into the inheritance, and being drawn into buried secrets, an unexpected sisterhood and a family record she was never supposed to see.
Where the finale left everybody
The season signed off by establishing that Ramona's biological father is Steven rather than Joe, which makes her, Connor and Annie full siblings. Ramona then heads for New York to spend time with her father, and Annie stays behind at Lake Muskoka.
That split generates most of the open questions. Whether Ramona changes schools and leaves Canada for good. Whether Annie has any means of supporting herself once she is on her own.
The sharper cliffhanger belongs to Connor, who answers a call from an adoption agency and is told that his and Annie's birth mother would like to meet them both. He had still not passed that on to Annie when the finale ended, which leaves a fracture sitting there waiting.
What Megan Park says she would do with it
The show's creator spoke to Entertainment Weekly on August 7 about where a second season could go. Her argument is that a first season spends much of its time constructing the world, and that a renewal is the point at which a show can loosen up and get further into it.
The specific hooks she names are the two girls having effectively traded lives, which gives a second season an obvious place to return to, and the question of what becomes of the property once Ramona turns 18.
She would also spend more time on the adults. She picks out the identity of Oona's mother as a character worth bringing in, and describes the series as threaded through with parent problems on both sides, which is the frame she puts around Connor's phone call too.
Cast and timing
Nothing is confirmed, because there is no renewal to confirm anything for. The main cast, all of whom you would expect back, is Ella Rubin, Amelie Hoeferle, Jacob Whiteduck-Lavoie, Daniel Quinn-Toye, Bo Bragason, Keen Ruffalo, Mabel Strachan, Missi Pyle, Jay Duplass and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
There is no date either, although the precedent is encouraging. Amazon has tended to turn its bigger titles around inside a year. The Summer I Turned Pretty premiered on June 17, 2022 and was back on July 14, 2023.
