Rafael Pavarotti has one of the most recognizable visual signatures in fashion photography: saturated color, hard contrast, and a surreal, sculptural sense of texture, built across campaigns for Chanel and Dior and portraits of Rihanna, Beyonce, and Harry Styles. Now that body of work is getting its first proper museum treatment, with more than 200 of his prints on view at the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris.

## From a borrowed camera to a global career

Pavarotti was born in 1993 in Para, in the Brazilian Amazon, and taught himself photography at 12 using his father's Kodak. The exhibition, staged with Brazilian luxury group Iguatemi as a partner, starts there, with some of his earliest hometown photographs, before moving through his first professional shoots in Rio de Janeiro at 16 and his later stops in Sao Paulo, London, and eventually Paris, where he is now based.

## Why color is never just decoration for him

Pavarotti traces his relationship to color directly back to where he grew up. 'Colour has always been central to my understanding of the world,' he told ELLE. 'Growing up in the Amazon, colour was never separate from life. In my photography, it is deeply connected to memory, presence, and the ability of an image to preserve something beyond the moment in which it was created.' He points to the people around him as the real throughline of his work, saying his family, friends, and community remain his biggest influences, with the Amazon itself still functioning as a source of energy and orientation in everything he shoots.

## What he is actually after in a portrait

Asked about photographing some of the most famous faces working today, Pavarotti described the job in terms that have little to do with fame at all. 'For me, photography has always been about seeing another person fully,' he said. 'Every portrait is an exchange that requires trust, attention, and openness.' That approach has carried into work he considers more personal, including a 2022 British Vogue cover featuring nine Black models, part of a broader effort to make his images a place where more people can recognize themselves. 'I want people to encounter images that remain open, that continue to exist in their minds after they have seen them,' he added.
