Everyone else is still arguing about jazz shoes and opera flats. Kristen Stewart appears to have settled the question of summer footwear privately and moved on with her life.
The shoe
Out promoting The Wrong Girls this week, the stoner comedy she stars in, she has stayed on the Adidas Samba throughout. Not the quiet version of it either. Hers is a jet black base with tri stripes in neon green, bright enough to register from the other side of a room.
She has worn them with enormously baggy shorts and graphic T-shirts, and then worn them onto The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon with a leather Alex Perry dress, which is the sort of combination that either works immediately or does not work at all.
It is not a one shoe habit
The Adidas commitment runs wider than a single silhouette. In New York on Tuesday she turned up in a pair of Handball Spezials, whose low profile and striping do much the same job the Samba does.
Practical shoes have been in her wardrobe for years. This is the person who handled the high heel dress code at Cannes in 2018 by taking her shoes off on the carpet and walking up barefoot.
Why the timing is funny
The Samba had its spell as the It shoe roughly between 2020 and 2022. The industry has since moved on to slimmer and stranger shapes, or demoted the Samba to the thing you put on to run errands in.
So while the hunt for the next sneaker carries on without her, Stewart has quietly declined to take part. She has always dressed to her own instructions, and the footwear is following the same rule: the shoe already in the wardrobe is doing the job.
