Kaia Gerber understands the naked dress well enough to know it does not need help. For the New York premiere of Ryan Murphy's The Shards, she wore a sheer Valentino gown by Alessandro Michele and then declined to put anything else in front of it.

The dress

The series is set in the eighties. The gown is not. It reads as nineties supermodel, an era Gerber has gravitated toward for as long as she has been dressing for cameras, which given her surname is not a coincidence.

The silhouette is slim, with a minimal square neckline hung from fine spaghetti straps, falling into Art Deco crystal embroidery worked over tulle so sheer the embellishment appears to float rather than sit on fabric.

What she did not do

Almost everything. Soft waves of the sort her mother made famous, a pair of Briony Raymond diamond studs, and nothing else. When the construction of a dress is the story, adding a necklace is just noise.

It is also a deliberate step away from where red carpets have gone. Method dressing has become close to a uniform, Zendaya's run of Odyssey and Spider-Man looks being the most disciplined recent example, but Gerber and her stylist Emma Jade Morrison have kept The Shards press run quieter than that.

The rest of the day

The press rounds beforehand were built from staples: a body skimming Alaia maxi dress in deep cherry red, then an exactly tailored little black dress.

Which makes the point of the whole run. A promotional tour does not have to narrate the plot. Sometimes suggesting the mood does the same work and leaves the dress room to be looked at.
