Lena Dunham has spent years fielding the same question about whether Girls would ever come back. On October 13, HBO confirmed that it finally will, with the four central cast members returning for a limited run.

What brought it back

Dunham had left the door open before. In a 2025 interview with Variety, she said she would consider revisiting the characters if there were a specific, meaningful moment in their lives worth exploring, things like becoming mothers, entering menopause, or moving into assisted living. HBO's Amy Gravitt, who oversees the network's comedy programming, framed the new chapter as a shift in focus from the chaos of one's twenties to the milestone of turning forty.

Dunham herself described the return as something that only came together once she pictured the characters in the present. The idea arrived around her own fortieth birthday, she said, and once it did, revisiting the group felt less like a reunion and more like picking up a conversation that had simply paused.

Who is confirmed to return

HBO has confirmed that Dunham will return as Hannah, alongside Allison Williams as Marnie, Jemima Kirke as Jessa, Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna, and Andrew Rannells as Elijah. It is still unclear whether Adam Driver or Christopher Abbott will reprise their roles as Adam and Charlie, and the same uncertainty applies to supporting cast members Alex Karpovsky, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Jake Lacy.

Where the characters might be now

No plot details have been released, but Dunham has previously floated ideas about where each character landed. She imagined Shoshanna divorced from a stint as the mayor of New York and now running a zero-waste athleisure startup, and Marnie on her third marriage and in need of a very specific recovery program. Jessa, in her telling, ended up unvaccinated and living on a boat in Croatia, while Elijah became the fourth lead on a sitcom. Hannah, meanwhile, teaches at Bard, is raising her son, and has largely let go of wanting fame.

The original series ran from 2012 to 2017, following four women navigating their twenties in New York. HBO has confirmed production on the five-episode revival will begin in 2027, a decade after the season six finale, though no release date has been set.
