Gilmore Girls is getting the documentary treatment. Variety reported on August 6 that the series, which built itself around Lorelai Gilmore and her teenage daughter Rory, is the subject of a film about how it was made, assembled from footage shot during production and the accounts of the people who made it.
Whose account it is
The film is framed through the creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband, the executive producer Daniel Palladino. The stated ambition is to work out how a show that nobody expected much from ended up being watched across generations, by taking apart the particular mix of writers, cast, crew and collaborators that produced it. The promised material includes outtakes that have never been released, footage from behind the camera, and pages of script.
Who appears
Lauren Graham, who played Lorelai, will feature, along with several other central figures from the production. Alexis Bledel, who played Rory, has not been confirmed either way.
Graham marked the announcement on Instagram with a run of photographs from across the series and a caption that amounted to a shrug and a confirmation that a documentary is happening.
Where and when
It will stream on HBO Max. No release date has been given, and the film does not yet have a title.
