Dakota Johnson clearly has coffee on the brain lately. After debuting a richer, darker glossed espresso hair color earlier this month with colorist Tracey Cunningham, she brought that same coffee inspired energy to her nails at Milan Fashion Week, opting for a warm brown manicure worth calling brown sugar espresso.
A shift away from her usual neutrals
The look marks a real departure from Johnson's typical preference for soft, neutral polish. She is not alone in the move toward darker nails this season. Gaelle Lebrat-Personnaz, CEO of Manucurist Paris, said brown is shaping up to be a major fall trend, calling it an elevated nude that pairs naturally with cozy sweaters, pumpkin patches and leaf peeping trips. She pointed to the shade's association with coffee, chocolate and caramel as part of why it reads as so comforting this time of year. Anne Hathaway recently made a similar move with her own cherry cocoa manicure.
How to get the look
The exact tone matters here. Johnson chose a rich, slightly warm toned brown rather than anything cooler or more muted. To recreate it, start with a clear base coat, apply two coats of an opaque chestnut polish, then finish with a glossy topcoat for shine.
