The effortful era is finished. The autumn and winter 2026 shows at New York Fashion Week made a close to unanimous case that looking like a tired working person is not a thing anybody needs to correct.

Where the designers went for reference was the bedroom. Blurred, recently kissed lips at Boy London. Bedhead at Sandy Liang. It is a clear move away from the controlled minimalism of the last few seasons, and after a summer spent on ghost lashes it is hardly a shock.

The woman being described here air dries rather than reaching for the Dyson, lets her liner shift where it wants, and accepts a degree of mess if it gets her out of the door faster. Even the nail polish is barely there.

Hair that has been slept on

At Coach, Guido Palau let it do as it liked, leaving light crimps, frizz and static in place underneath the tailoring. At Collina Strada, Mustafa Yanaz took his reference from his own son and built the look around hat hair, which he describes as a natural swirl reading as backcombed and twisted in places, using Bumble and Bumble Thickening Dryspun Texture Spray.

Christian Siriano treated hair as jewellery instead. Lacy Redway wound it around the models' necks to suggest something tucked in, with help from the Tresemme A-List Collection.

Sandy Liang put sleep deprivation on the mood board outright. Romy Soleimani dusted a light halo of Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Blush around the eyes and skipped concealer entirely, for the look of a morning after.

Eyeliner, in several states of disrepair

LaQuan Smith went the opposite way with a sharp cat eye, running the tail out toward the end of the brow and stretching the inner corners.

Tory Burch left it looking slept in, as though the liner had been given the whole night to migrate into the lashes. Christian Cowan did something similar and kept it along the lower lash line.

At Sergio Hudson, Sir John added double kohl wings flicking out past the brow tail. Ulla Johnson made the case for colour over black, with Romy Soleimani using Sisley Paris Phyto-Khol Star Waterproof in Mystic Plum and Matte Jungle for short coloured wings, and putting a hot blue red lip on the rest.

Lips that have been used

Boy London's instruction, in effect, is to kiss more. Marieke Thibaut built a grungy blur with Mac MACximal Matte Lipstick in Mixed Media and Powder Kiss Lip + Cheek Mousse in Rekindled, concentrated in the middle of the mouth.

Proenza Schouler took the same idea somewhere else and applied lipstick to only half of each lip. Altuzarra kept the whole thing faint, with Bobbi Brown Crushed Lip Color in Cocoa.

The one polished thing

A crisp side part, grazing the shoulder. LaQuan Smith went for volume at the root with a blowout and light layered curls. Ralph Lauren ran textured waves next to smooth side parted bobs. Christian Cowan and Sandy Liang slicked the roots down until the flyaways vanished, with Cowan's version covering one eye.
